Kaikeyi rose to receive her lord with reverence, her face beaming with joy, welcoming her beloved king with graceful courtesy. With a gentle smile, she began to speak:
Kaikeyi: "When the experiences of life turn out exactly as we imagine, that is true happiness. But when life gives us blessings far beyond what we ever dreamed of, that is the highest fortune. My life is filled with such fortune! I am joyous to have become the daughter-in-law of the illustrious and sacred Solar Dynasty, and the beloved wife of the brave, virtuous Emperor Dasharatha. Ah, here comes my lord… welcome, O sovereign of kings! I bow with my head at your lotus feet."
Dasharatha: "Kaikeyi, may auspiciousness be with you."
Kaikeyi: "All that you desire has been arranged. Please rest here in comfort."
Dasharatha: "Kaikeyi, why this elaborate courtesy? Am I an outsider or a guest in my own palace? I have no leisure for rest—I am weighed with duties."
Kaikeyi (with curiosity): "I do not understand your words! What is this mystery? Your manner today seems unusually swift and resolute. Tell me, what noble task calls you?"
Dasharatha: "I always hasten to come to you, my dear."
Kaikeyi: "Yes, but today your face is both radiant and grave. A glow of valor shines forth. It seems something extraordinary has arisen. Tell me, my lord—what is this great work that awaits you? It will be my pride to know the glory of the task you take upon yourself."
Dasharatha (with affection): "Ah, such sweetness in your words! I had thought not to speak of it, but your love compels me. Listen well, O gentle one."

(in verse)"O graceful Kaikeyi, hear me well, With courage I ascend to heaven’s realm. There, to crush the wicked foes, To guard the gods, I swiftly go."
Dasharatha: "My beloved, I have been summoned to the heavens."
Kaikeyi (startled): "Ah no! Do not say such words. May you live for countless ages yet!"
Dasharatha (smiling): "Wait, wait—do not mistake my meaning. Not to depart this world, but to attend the divine assembly. Indra, the king of gods, has sent word: the heavens are under siege by evil forces. He seeks my aid. With valor, I will strike down the wicked and restore the splendor of heaven. Bless me, my queen, and send me forth with auspicious rites."
