The Marvel of Drona’s Archery
Humiliated by the rejection of his childhood friend Drupada, Drona arrived at Hastinapura. There, along with his wife and son, he began residing in the house of his brother-in-law Kripa. For many days, he lived incognito, revealing his identity to no one.
During Kripa’s absence, Drona’s son Ashwatthama occasionally instructed the royal princes in archery, though none knew who he really was. Drona had resolved that he would introduce himself to the world only through a demonstration of his skill. That opportunity soon arrived. 🎯
One day, the princes were playing in a field outside the city when their ball fell into a deep, dilapidated well. Despite repeated attempts, they could not retrieve it. The well was too deep, and descending into it was impossible.
At that moment, Drona—dark in complexion, lean in body, and radiant with the discipline of an Agnihotri—approached the princes after completing his daily rituals. Seeing them dejected, he asked the reason for their distress. After hearing their problem, he smiled gently and said:
“Alas! Shame upon your Kshatriya strength! You, born in the illustrious Bharata lineage, are unable to retrieve a mere ball from a well using archery?”
He continued:
“I shall retrieve this ball using only blades of grass. Not only that—I shall throw my ring into the well and bring that out too. In return, provide me with food.” 🍃
Saying this, he removed the ring from his finger and dropped it into the well.
Immediately, the eldest prince, Yudhishthira, stepped forward and said:
“O revered Brahmin! If your words prove true, not merely food for a few days—we shall ensure your livelihood for life.”
Drona smiled. Taking a handful of sacred grass, he transformed one blade into a weapon through mantra. Fixing it to his bow, he aimed at the ball and released it. The grass-shaft struck the ball. Then he shot a second blade, which stuck to the first, and a third to the second… one after another, forming a chain. The princes watched in amazement as he continued. Soon, a long chain of grass-arrows extended from the well to the top. Using this improvised chain, Drona pulled up the ball and handed it to them. 😮✨
The princes rubbed their eyes in disbelief. Then they remembered the ring.
“Revered sir, please retrieve your ring as well,” they requested.
This time, Drona used a proper arrow. The princes only heard the swift sound—“sooom!” In the very next moment, the ring was in Drona’s hand. He showed it to the astonished princes, who stood speechless.
They realized they had witnessed an extraordinary feat of archery. Striking a target is skillful—but drawing the object back through weaponry was something beyond ordinary mastery. 🎯🔥
This achievement illustrated a profound principle: when scientific understanding of materials combines with inner spiritual power, remarkable feats become possible. Through mantra-strength and self-discipline, even a simple blade of grass could be transformed into a mighty weapon. Such mastery arises only from immense inner strength and yogic concentration.
