In the vast tapestry of Purāṇic lore, one name echoes through every age — Nārada Muni, the wandering sage, the bearer of the vīṇā Mahati, the messenger of destiny, and above all, the beloved devotee of the Supreme Lord. But who was Nārada before becoming the celestial seer of the three worlds?
This is his sacred beginning.

The Boy Who Served the Yogis
Once, a group of exalted Brahmin sages lived absorbed in Vedic discipline.
A humble maidservant attended to their needs, bringing along her young son.
The child, soft-hearted and eager, served the sages with purity and devotion.
Every day, with their permission, he consumed just a morsel of the food left in their vessels — accepting it as sacred prasāda.
That divine food washed away all impurities from his heart.
As days passed, the boy absorbed the fragrance of holiness from the sages —
their serenity, their worship, their sacred conversations.
His childish restlessness faded, replaced by purity, humility, and an inner joy.
Noticing his sincerity, the sages showered upon him their full grace and affection.
Daily, they narrated to him the enchanting stories of the Lord.
These divine tales blossomed in the boy’s heart as the first seeds of unwavering devotion.
The Gift of Secret Knowledge
One day, before departing on their travels, the sages initiated the boy into a profound secret —
the very wisdom the Lord Himself had once imparted to them.
Through this rare teaching, the boy realized the presence of the Divine behind all creation.
His heart became the seat of pure devotion, free from the clouds of passion and ignorance.
The Turning Point: His Mother’s Death
Despite his longing for a life of renunciation, the child stayed with his mother —
for she depended entirely on him.
But destiny soon intervened.
One evening, while milking a cow, she was bitten by a serpent and died instantly.
The boy, strengthened by spiritual knowledge, did not fall into grief.
He saw it as the Lord’s will — the final bond holding him to worldly life had been severed.
Thus, he began his journey northwards, seeking only the Lord.
The First Vision of the Lord
The boy wandered through prosperous kingdoms, lush forests, and majestic mountains —
yet nothing attracted him.
His heart yearned only for the Divine.
Exhausted, he rested under a banyan tree in a lonely forest.
There, he closed his eyes and meditated on the lotus feet of the Supreme.
Tears of devotion streamed down his face —
and in that very moment, the Lord revealed Himself within the boy’s heart.
Overwhelmed by the bliss of divine vision, the boy’s entire being trembled with joy.
But the vision vanished as suddenly as it had appeared.
He tried again and again to behold the Lord, but the Divine form did not return.
Then came a celestial voice:
“Beloved child, in this birth you shall not see Me again.
I appeared once only to awaken in you the longing that will burn away all worldly desires.
Carry My memory steadfastly in your heart.
At the end of the cosmic cycle, you will come to Me again.”
Birth of a Divine Messenger
From that moment, the boy spent his life chanting the sacred names and glories of the Lord, wandering without attachment or pride.
When the great dissolution arrived, Creation returned to the breath of Nārāyaṇa —
and the boy merged into Him.
After a thousand divine ages, when Creation was born anew,
Brahmā manifested several great sages from his mind —
and among them emerged the same boy, now reborn as Nārada,
the eternal devotee, the divine messenger, the sage of the three worlds.
Holding his celestial vīṇā “Mahati,”
he roams across heaven, earth, and the netherworld,
singing the Lord’s glories
and carrying His message for the welfare of all beings.
Thus Nārada Muni became Devaṛṣi,
the beloved servant of the Lord,
and an eternal guiding light in the path of devotion.
